LAN-TEL for Your Cable Removal Needs:

New tenants bring new networking and communications needs to your existing office space. In the past, more often than not, this resulted in the installation of new cabling and the abandonment of the cable plant used by previous tenants. As a result, many office buildings contain large amounts of abandoned cable. Abandoned cable is defined by the National Electric Code® as “Installed communications cable that is not terminated at both ends at a connector or other equipment and not identified for future use with a tag.”

In the past, there was a tendency to categorize these cables as “out of sight, out of mind.” In the last several years, this has all changed due to the fact that the National Fire Protection Agency ("NFPA") and the National Electric Code® ("NEC") recognized the potential safety threat posed by abandoned cable. Some of these threats include:

  • The potential to fuel and spread fires in concealed spaces; thereby, creating a significant danger to fire and safety personnel
  • Overfilled cable conduit pathways and spaces
  • Severely restricted airflow through ducts

As a result of these identified threats, the NFPA and the NEC have developed codes and standards requiring the removal of abandoned cable. Specifically, Section 800 of the 2002 NEC states: “ The accessible portion of abandoned communications cable shall not be permitted to remain.” This section also states that: “abandoned cables in verticals shall be removed.”
